Why Do Holographic Stickers Curl?
Holographic vinyl is a multi-layer construction consisting of a holographic film, adhesive, and release liner. Since each layer reacts differently to moisture, heat, and tension, any imbalance can cause the finished sticker to warp after printing and cutting.
The two most common causes are:
1. Unstable Release Liner
Many budget holographic vinyls use lower-grade paper liners that readily absorb moisture from the environment. As the liner expands, the holographic film remains stable, creating internal stress that causes the edges to curl.
This problem often becomes more noticeable after heavy ink coverage or changes in humidity.
2. Excessive Manufacturing Tension
During the coating process, the film is pulled through multiple rollers. If the web tension is too high, the film becomes slightly stretched. After printing, drying, and cutting, that stored tension is released, causing the film to shrink back and lift at the edges.
The result is the familiar "post-print edge curl".
